18 ways to spend time during long layovers

Here is the question

What to do during long layovers?

Embarkation points, transfers, train station and bus depots. how!??

-It all depends on where you have a layover, it can be at a bus station, train station what kind of airport you are in. You can be at an airport in an outside “lounge” or at an airport with a pool! Yes, some have it!

Some suggestions

Relax and eat:  Airports have restaurants and cafes where you can grab a meal or a snack. Make sure you drink water and take light meals. If you are lucky enough to have access to a VIP lounge, maybe grab a glass of wine…only one.

Shopping: Looking for souvenirs or gifts? Why not explore the duty-free shops or other stores in the airport? These shops often offer discounts on items where taxes and fees are waived. Just make sure to fill out any necessary forms and inquire about available discounts before making a purchase. Based on my personal experience, cosmetics and perfumes tend to be pricier at the airport compared to your local stores, but it ultimately depends on the country you reside in. On average, souvenirs at the airport are generally more expensive. However, there are times when you stumble upon unique items that you can’t find back home. So, go ahead and indulge in some airport shopping – there’s always a good excuse to treat yourself!

Connect to Wi-Fi:  Many airports offer free Wi-Fi. Connect to stay updated and entertained. Many others charge you fees for staying connected so make sure you check what is best for you.

Charge Devices:  Look for charging stations to keep your devices powered up, or you’ll be stuck without a way to check in!

Read:  Don’t forget to grab a book or magazine, whether it’s in physical form or available online. Especially during international travels where internet access might be unreliable, having a paper book or magazine can be a lifesaver. Plus, vintage vibes are totally in right now! Scientific studies have shown that we tend to learn and retain information better when reading from physical books rather than online. Not only are paper books easier on the eyes, but they also help us relax and doze off more easily. And let’s not forget, reading from a book reduces the chances of getting distracted by countless online temptations. So, go ahead and indulge in the joy of reading from a good old-fashioned book or magazine!

People watch: one of my favorites. It is an art form especially when you travel to different cultures. Watching people in their natural environment offers a unique insight into the local culture. You can learn about customs, fashion, social norms, and daily routines simply by observing how people interact. No wonder I focused my studies on learning from different cultures:-) Maybe you can even see a bride…oh yeah!!

Knitting projects: Knitting has been a beloved craft that has brought joy and versatility to many. Regrettably, unforeseen circumstances often leave numerous knitting projects unfinished. But fear not, for now is the ideal moment to revive these incomplete works and see them through to completion! Knitting not only allows for boundless creativity, but also aids in enhancing concentration and reducing anxiety. Moreover, knitting necessitates a certain level of mathematical understanding, particularly when tackling intricate patterns. So, let’s pick up those needles and threads and embark on a journey of knitting mastery!

Movies:  Download a few movies on your tablet/phone/laptop before your trip.

Organize email/pics: it is a great time to get important items such as emails and pictures organized before, during, and after travel. Otherwise, it might get all piled up and confusing. I always have a hard time taking the time to organize all of it. Does it happen to you too?

Puzzles: Any puzzle online for the practical purpose of being on the road, is therapeutic and entertaining. Besides being engaging and improving cognition, they strengthen motor skills. GO to those brain cells!

Sketchbook/ coloring:  it might be a good time to start some artwork such as drawing, coloring, . Studies show that it is very therapeutic, helps with anxiety, and increases creativity. Art is ageless!!!!

Sudoku: the positive benefits of sudoku go way beyond entertaining and calming your mind. Studies have shown that not only sudoku improves memory and coordination but also improves concentration and problem-solving skills. More material to become a brainy self!

Stretch: Maintaining an active and mobile body is imperative while traveling, as adequate blood circulation plays a pivotal role in one’s overall well-being. To prevent blood clots and reduce stiffness, it is crucial to include stretching in your travel routine. Make sure to stretch before, during, and after long journeys to ensure your body stays limber and healthy. When flying, seize any opportunity to stretch, such as while waiting to use the restroom or fetching a beverage from the back. If you spot someone lifting their arms high up in the air while on the plane, don’t hesitate to greet them – it’s probably me!

Journal: Journaling can capture information about your travel. It can also help you to discover yourself and stay in the present. One great thing about traveling is that you can document your goals so that you don’t miss things while on the road.
