Dr. P’s road to volunteering

From my earliest memories, generosity and collaboration have always been part of my world. It wasn’t until I began writing that I truly grasped the profound impact of this, as writing has the ability to encourage deeper contemplation and analysis.

In every part of my life, I have encountered people who either volunteer or try to help others. Volunteering has become a regular part of my life, as I am passionate about ensuring resources reach those in need directly.

My first memory

My immigrant grandfather enjoyed grocery shopping and often prepared carefully curated boxes of food for friends in need, spanning from individuals within his Northern Italian community to his neighbors. His primary business was conveniently situated near a location requiring assistance, which he always provided. He was deeply cherished by many and continues to be a significant source of inspiration for me to this day. Unfortunately my cousins forged documents to steal most of it.

My second memory

My mom used to have me collect toys and clothes to donate to children every six months, which I didn’t really like when I was young. It took some time to get used to decluttering, but it eventually became a routine after she explained how it could benefit less fortunate children who didn’t have much. The charity we supported was highly valued and continues to be a major inspiration for me.

My third memory

One of my colleagues, Ariana Ulloa, transformed into a close friend and mentor who became my role model. Ariana was a remarkably brilliant, intelligent, and compassionate individual who always inspired generosity. To learn more about her extraordinary life, you can look her up by name. She continues to be a source of inspiration for me when engaging in acts of service.

My fourth memory

My mentor, Professor Dr. Sean Hughes, and his wife Carol were more than just mentors; they were my biggest cheerleaders. Their kindness and unwavering support were instrumental in my graduation. I owe my achievement of becoming Dr. P to their immense love and support. Another significant role model in my life.

The topic of my dissertation and research

The main topic of my doctoral dissertation is “What and How university students learn during a Service Learning Program abroad.” I am currently researching topics on learning, social development, and the issue of “happiness” through volunteering in remote areas of the world.

My current website and Blog

This is truly intended to benefit as many folks as possible. I am learning about blogging, and it is a wonderful way to reach out to the world. I learned throughout my travels and volunteering that the help needed is never enough, and even small help means a lot.

I have sponsored my travels and made some donations, but I would like to make the site self-sufficient and travel part-time. I am in need of a good camera, computer, etc. Any “extra” equipment will definitely be donated, and I will document it on the “events” section of my site.

I certainly appreciate all donations, volunteers, and sponsors who make my work, research, and most importantly my calling in assisting others a reality.
